Always test a product

Before you use a new product, it is advisable to test the product on a small area of skin. Even if a product claims to be for sensitive skin, or “hypoallergenic”, it may cause your skin to react badly. The test area should be monitored for at least 24 hours. If there is no reaction then there should be no problems using the product further.

Maintain a skin care regime

Because sensitive skin is more affected by the weather and pollution, it is worthwhile trying to protect it. This can be easily done by ensuring that your skin is well moisturised in the morning and again at night. This will form a barrier to protect your skin from water loss and environmental factors.

As WebMD explains, it is best to keep things simple and to adopt a basic daily routine which will gently cleanse and moisturise your skin throughout the day. Blot dry your skin after gently washing, and immediately apply your moisturiser so that the maximum can be absorbed.

Sensitive skin is also more sensitive to sun exposure. Use a sunscreen every day that will help to protect delicate skin. Combined with skin refreshing products such as the Avene Sensitive Skin Gift Set (, your skin will feel healthier and protected.

Take care with your cosmetics

Whilst make-up is available for sensitive skin, as many will know it can still cause irritations. It can help to use a mineral powder or a foundation with a silicone base. This will reduce the likelihood of any irritation. In particular, products that are used around the eyes should be chosen with care. Avoid waterproof mascara as it can be difficult to remove and the cleanser required can cause more irritation. Pencil eyeliner rather than liquid eyeliner will be better for sensitive skin, as the former will not contain latex which is prone to causing irritation. Throw away any cosmetics that are very old, because they can go bad and become contaminated. It will also help to ensure that brushes are cleaned regularly.
