In July 2019, BMW will put on sale a new M Performance version of its successful Series 3, but before its launch it will officially be presented later this month at the Los Angeles Show . We are talking about the BMW M340i xDrive sedan , which represents the prelude to the BMW M model itself, the all-powerful BMW M3 .
This interesting version of the saloon is equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine , which according to the brand is newly developed and offers a power of 374 hp , in addition to xDrive four-wheel drive, a specific tuning of sports court, and a more aggressive aesthetic.
The standard equipment of the M340i xDrive includes M Sport suspension, sports variable steering, M Sport electronic control rear differential, M Sport brake equipment (348 and 345 mm discs together with four and one piston floating calipers, respectively), sports exhaust M (whose note is adjusted depending on the driving mode), etc …
There is also a set of 18-inch light alloy wheels , signed by M and with tires measuring 225/45 R18 on the front axle and 255/40 R18 on the rear. Optionally you can also choose 19-inch M wheels, which are also shod with higher performance tires.
Six turbo cylinders
The heart of the model is a block of 3 liters of displacement with cylinder head of aluminum that resorts to the technology BMW TwinPower Turbo with Turbocompresor Twinscroll , to the variable elevation of valves Valvetronic and also to a system of direct injection of high precision (until 350 bar) .
BMW also highlights the two particulate filters installed in the exhaust, which allow the model to comply with the Euro 6d-TEMP standard . The approved consumption of the M340i xDrive is 7.5 liters per hundred kilometers in mixed cycle (172 g / km of CO2), calculated using WLTP but adapted to the previous NEDC.
It is the most powerful engine ever installed in a Series 3 of the conventional range, which exceeds its predecessor in 48 hp and 50 Nm, for a total of 374 hp and 500 Nm . As standard it is associated with a Steptronic eight-speed automatic transmission and the performance level, thanks also to the Launch Control , means 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds (half a second less).
The aforementioned M Sport suspension has a rear axle with five arms and a height reduced by 10 millimeters, although the adaptive suspension M is also available as an option. For its part, the intelligent all-wheel drive xDrive gives priority to the rear axle, depending on the manufacturer, although it is not detailed in what proportion.
Own design and equipment, too
In terms of appearance, the new design of the grille formed by the two classic kidneys of the house, the rear spoiler in the body color, distinctive Cerium metallic gray, specific housings for the rear-view mirrors or the exits of Trapezoidal exhaust , for example.
In the passenger compartment, in addition to M sports seats with specific upholstery in Sensatec and Alcantara , we find an anthracite-covered BMW Individual roof, leather steering wheel with cams, Tetragon aluminum decorative moldings or digital instrument panel with M340i logos, among others things.
